At Florence Middle School we seek to provide “5 Star Service” to the students and community which we serve. Each day the halls of our school are filled with over 700 students and many teachers and staff. Collaboratively we work to facilitate critical thinking, develop good character, foster healthy relationships, promote responsible choices and inspire lifelong learning. We provide a total school experience through a demanding and individualized core curriculum, 24 encore classes and 14 competitive sports including the only equestrian team in Alabama public schools. We provide a nurturing environment as students on our campus navigate through the transitional and challenging years of adolescence. This year our theme is ENGAGE! We want to engage students in their learning.

The city of Florence is nestled in the Tennessee Valley and Florence Middle School is located in the heart of our small, Renaissance City. It is within walking distance from the University of North Alabama providing a powerful partnership which allows students from both institutions to benefit. Each week university students visit our campus to observe or assist with our instructional and counseling programs.

Building on the rich musical and performing arts tradition of the Shoals area, we offer electives in chorus, concert band, jazz band, guitar, general music, orchestra, theater and stage craft.  Each year our students excel in these areas and showcase their talents through participation in local and state performances. This past year our school had the most middle school students out of our state to be selected for All-State Chorus. We work hard to provide avenues for students to ENGAGE, express, develop and excel in their talents.

Florence Middle School athletes have the unique privilege of calling Braly Stadium home. We also host the high school football games, as well as, games for the University of North Alabama. Being at the center of high school and college athletics creates an energy and excitement for our middle school students that is exceptional.  This provides a dynamic force for the competitive and athletic culture of our community. To meet the needs and expectations of our students and parents we created an athletic PE period, allowing the 249 FMS athletes to take PE during 8th period. This serves to protect academics on game days when early dismissal and travel is required. When it comes to athletics, our students are ENGAGED!

Florence Middle School was designated as a National MetLife NASSP (National Association of Secondary School Principals) Breakthrough School. We were also selected as one of 15 schools across the nation to participate in the Inaugural NASSP & U.S. Army Leadership and Professional Development Symposium. Our school has been featured in two national publications and I’ve had the honor of presenting on the national level about the wonderful things taking place in our school as a model for others.

We are so excited about the 2016-17 school year! We plan to dream big, expect success and ENGAGE like never before.
